Tender baby mangoes marinated in a tumeric brine, make for the most delicious of simple pickles, that tempts everyone in the family. Apparently, when eaten with the seed, Uppu Kadugu Mangai can cure stomach ulcers!

On hot summer holidays, Girijapaati's mother would sit on the floor and make her children sit in a circle around her. She would hand each child one appalam (fried papad) and one Uppu Kadugu Mangai. She would feed a mouth to a child and move on the next one. The child who had then been fed, would take a bit of the pickle and a bite of the appalam to complete that round. This went on till the bowl was empty or the children got full.

While recreating that above scene may not be possible today, the deliciousness of these little salty-sour mango bites remains unparalleled. Try yours with a glass of buttermilk (one sip, one bite), samabar rice or the all-time popular curd rice.
