Black Nightshade Berries, Curd, Salt
Manathakkali (Black Nightshade) has berries that look a bit like green pepper and are often referred to as milagu thakkali (pepper tomatoes). The Nishade berries are marinated in curd with salt and sun-dried over a week or two. The marinating and drying processes are alternated till the curd is all soaked up. Finally the Manathakkali berries are sun-dried till they are completely dehydrated.
Manathakkali vathal is fried just before serving and is one of Girijapaati's most effective home-remedies for stomach ulcers, when served with ghee and hot rice. The Manathakalli Vathal and Sundakkai Vathal can also be used to Vathakuzhambhu (spicy tamarind gravy) for the tang lovers.
HOW TO USE:
Fry till blackish (but not burnt). Serve with hot rice & ghee or curd rice.
